AI Candidate Screening: Methods, Risks and Rules in 2026

AI candidate screening explained: the main methods, how it differs from resume screening, the risks, and what NYC, EU and Indian rules say.

What is AI candidate screening?

AI candidate screening is the use of software to check, summarise and rank applicants at the start of hiring, before a recruiter spends time on them. It covers more than reading resumes: chatbots, assessments and recorded video or voice answers can all be screening steps.

Willo, a video-interview vendor, describes it as using algorithms and automation to analyse, summarise and prioritise applicants faster, with the goal of supporting hiring decisions and not making them alone. This post covers the whole set of methods, while how AI resume screening works covers the resume step in detail.

What are the main methods of AI candidate screening?

There are four common methods, each collecting a different kind of evidence. The table follows Willo's list, and the last column is our own summary of the risks it names.

MethodWhat happensStrengthRisk to watch
Resume parsingSoftware extracts titles and skills and matches keywordsFast for high volumeBias, and misses soft skills
Chatbot or text screenA bot asks eligibility questions and builds a shortlistConsistent and efficientLimited insight beyond basic checks
Video or audio answersCandidates record answers, and the system transcribes and summarises themRicher signal than textPrivacy and fairness concerns
Phone-based AI screenAnswers are recorded and transcribed from a callLow frictionSpeech recognition errors across accents

Skills assessments, such as short tests or work samples, are a fifth layer many employers add. Willo describes a second stage that evaluates communication and fit among candidates who pass the first.

How is AI candidate screening different from AI resume screening?

Resume screening reads a document you already wrote, while candidate screening can also collect new evidence from you. It may ask you questions, time you on a task, or record your voice or face.

That difference matters. A resume parser can be tested by fixing your layout, but a voice or video screen depends on how you speak, your connection and your device. See our posts on how AI candidate matching works and what an AI hiring platform is for the wider picture.

What are the risks of AI candidate screening?

The main risks are bias, opacity, over-automation and legal exposure. Willo lists these four, and describes systems that learn from past hiring data which may carry prejudice, so the tool can repeat unfairness at scale.

It also warns that black-box systems cannot explain their decisions, that fully automated screens reduce candidate experience, and that speech recognition may make more errors with some accents. Its remedy is human oversight: recruiters should make final decisions using AI-generated insights.

What do the rules say?

Rules differ by place, and we quote only what we opened. This is not legal advice.

  • New York City. The city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection says Local Law 144 requires employers and agencies using automated employment decision tools to have a bias audit, make a summary of the results public, and give notice to candidates 10 business days before use. It began enforcing the law on 5 July 2023.
  • European Union. The European Commission's AI Act page lists AI tools for employment, such as CV-sorting software, as high-risk, with obligations that include risk assessment, logging and human oversight starting on 2 December 2027. It also says emotion recognition in workplaces is banned, in effect since 2 February 2025.
  • India. The government's release on the DPDP Rules 2025 says they were notified on 14 November 2025 with an 18-month phased compliance period. Data fiduciaries must give a clear consent notice, keep reasonable security safeguards, and respond to access, correction and erasure requests within ninety days.

We did not find a dedicated Indian law on AI hiring tools in the sources we opened. Employers in India should check how the DPDP obligations apply to applicant data with legal counsel.

What should candidates do about AI screening?

Prepare for the format and protect your data. These are our suggestions.

  1. Read the notice. Look for what is recorded, how long it is kept and who sees it.
  2. Test your setup. Check your microphone, camera, connection and a quiet space before a recorded screen.
  3. Answer the question asked. Use clear examples with a result, since the system transcribes what you say.
  4. Ask about a human option. If you need an adjustment, such as a phone call instead of a video, ask the employer.
  5. Keep your resume readable. The AI resume reviewer on asuraa.in takes your resume, a target job title and a job description, and gives ATS-compatibility feedback and keyword gaps.

What should employers do before using AI screening?

Treat it as a decision aid you can explain. Again, these are our suggestions.

  • Define the skills first. A tool can only screen for criteria you have written down. See how to screen candidates.
  • Keep a human in the decision. Willo says AI should inform decisions, never make them.
  • Ask the vendor hard questions. How is bias tested, what data is kept, and can a person override a score?
  • Tell candidates. Give notice, name the tool's role and offer a route to a person.

What do most guides on AI candidate screening get wrong?

Many are vendor pages, so they emphasise speed. These are the gaps to watch.

  • They treat all screening as one thing. A chatbot eligibility check and a scored video answer carry different risks.
  • They promise less bias. AI can reduce inconsistency, but Willo itself warns it can scale historical bias.
  • They skip the rules. Notice and audit duties already apply in some places, such as New York City.
  • They forget the candidate. Device quality, accent and disability can affect a recorded screen.

FAQ

What is AI candidate screening?

It is the use of software to check, summarise and rank applicants early in hiring. Methods include resume parsing, chatbots, assessments and recorded video or voice answers. Willo describes the goal as supporting hiring decisions, not replacing the recruiter who makes the final call.

How is AI candidate screening different from AI resume screening?

Resume screening reads the document you submitted. Candidate screening is wider and can also ask you questions through a chatbot, run assessments, or record your video or voice answers. That adds new evidence and new risks, such as speech recognition errors.

Is AI candidate screening legal in India?

We did not find a specific Indian law on AI hiring tools in the sources we opened. India's DPDP Rules 2025, notified on 14 November 2025, set duties on handling personal data, including clear notice. Employers should take legal advice on how they apply to hiring.

Can AI candidate screening be biased?

Yes. Willo warns that systems trained on past hiring data can repeat prejudice at scale, and that speech recognition may err across accents. Bias audits, human review and regular checks on who is being screened out can reduce the risk but not remove it.

Do employers have to tell candidates they use AI screening?

It depends on the place. New York City's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection says employers must give notice 10 business days before using an automated tool, and India's DPDP Rules require a clear consent notice for personal data. Check local rules.

How can candidates prepare for AI screening?

Read the employer's notice, test your camera, microphone and connection, and answer each question with a specific example. If you need an adjustment, ask for a human alternative. Keep your resume clear and matched to the job description too.

Final thoughts

AI candidate screening is a set of tools, from resume parsers to chatbots and recorded interviews, and each one collects different evidence with different risks. Human review, clear notice and bias checks are the safeguards the sources keep returning to.

Asuraa's long-term vision includes AI screening and AI interviews as steps between matching and a human interview, and that is a vision, not a shipped feature. Today you can improve your applications with the AI resume reviewer on asuraa.in.
