Background Verification Cost in India and Which Agencies Companies Use

What a background check costs in India, who actually pays for it, published fees from NSR, vendors and universities, and the agencies large employers use.

Last updated: 13 October 2026 · By the Asuraa Team

Quick answer: Background verification in India has no fixed national price: employers usually pay the agency, and most vendors quote by package and volume. The clearest published figure is NSR's Baseline Verification at Rs 1,800 plus taxes and institution fees (October 2026), while Equal lists checks from Rs 350 each. Large IT employers mostly use the 24 agencies empanelled on NASSCOM's National Skills Registry, including AuthBridge, First Advantage and IDfy.

Key takeaways

  • NSR's Baseline Verification costs Rs 1,800 plus applicable taxes plus any fees the agency pays to institutions, and covers identity details, addresses, one academic, one technical and one employment record.
  • NSR lists employee registration at Rs 400 plus taxes and annual maintenance at Rs 100 plus tax, and says either the employer or the employee can pay these.
  • Equal states its verifications start at Rs 350 each, excluding GST, with the final rate set by check type, volume and turnaround; AuthBridge publishes no prices.
  • Universities charge their own verification fees, for example Rs 1,000 per verification at NIT Delhi and Rs 750 at IIIT Kottayam, which agencies pass on.
  • As of October 2026 the National Skills Registry lists 24 empanelled background checkers, including AuthBridge, KPMG, First Advantage, IDfy, OnGrid, Deloitte and EY.

How much does background verification cost in India?

There is no single government price for background verification (BGV) in India: each agency quotes its own rate, and the only fixed, published numbers come from a few sources. The clearest public figure is the National Skills Registry's Baseline Verification, which costs Rs 1,800 plus applicable taxes plus any fee the agency has to pay an institution, according to the NSR background checkers page as of October 2026. That package covers date of birth, father's name, passport number, PAN, present and permanent address, one academic qualification, one technical qualification and one employment record.

Commercial agencies mostly price by quote. Equal, a verification platform, says on its pricing page that its verifications start at Rs 350 per verification, with the final rate depending on check type, volume and turnaround, and with GST added on top. AuthBridge's website lists no prices at all and sends prospective clients to its sales team to discuss pricing.

Who pays for background verification: the company or the candidate?

In a normal hiring process the employer commissions and pays for the check, because the agency works for the company. The NSR page on background checkers says that when a company requests a check, the company and its chosen agency agree the terms, conditions and reporting between themselves (NSR).

There are two situations where an individual may pay:

  1. NSR registration. NSR lists employee registration at Rs 400 plus applicable taxes and annual maintenance at Rs 100 plus tax per profile, and says both can be paid by the employer or the employee (NSR cost and charges). Its FAQ explains the Rs 400 as Rs 300 for registration plus Rs 100 for the first year's usage (NSR FAQ).
  2. Self-initiated verification. A professional can ask for their own NSR details to be verified, and in that case the agency collects documents and the fee directly from the professional (NSR).

Outside those two cases, treat any demand for a "BGV fee" before you have a genuine offer as a warning sign. Our guide on how to check if an offer letter is fake walks through the other red flags.

What do the published background verification prices look like?

The table below collects only prices that an official or vendor page states directly. Anything not listed here is quote-based.

NSR Baseline Verification (DOB, PAN, passport, addresses, 1 academic, 1 technical, 1 employment)Rs 1,800 + taxes + institution feesRequester (company or professional)NSR

Degree verification at NIT DelhiRs 1,000 per verification in India (free for police and government agencies)Requesting agencyNIT Delhi

Two lessons come out of this table. First, a "per check" price from a vendor is not the full cost, because universities charge their own verification fees that agencies pass on. Second, prices move with scope: an identity check is cheap, while a check that needs a field visit to an address or a reply from a slow university costs more and takes longer.

Which background verification agencies do Indian companies use?

Large IT and ITeS employers in India usually work with agencies empanelled on the National Skills Registry, because NASSCOM and NDML only empanel checkers that agree to follow a standard procedure and a standard format for recording results (NSR). As of October 2026 the NSR page lists 24 empanelled background checkers in three tiers.

NSR tierAgencies listed (October 2026)
PlatinumAuthBridge Research Services, KPMG Assurance and Consulting Services, Krya Screening, Matrix Business Services India, Vibrant Screen, Walsons Services
GoldA.M.S. Inform, ASDintech Services, Baldor Technologies (IDfy), Corporate Investigations India, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu India, Ernst & Young, First Advantage, Hello Verify India, Integrated Information Services, Netrika Consulting India, OnGrid (Handy Online Solutions), Pinkerton Corporate Risk Management India, SecureSearch Screening Services, Verifacts Services
SilvercFirst Background Checks, Crystal Screening Services, Evaluationz India, Screen Facts Services

You will also meet agencies outside this list, especially at startups and non-IT employers. The name on the email or link you receive tells you which agency your employer chose; you do not get to pick.

For scale, AuthBridge says on its homepage that it has more than 3,000 clients and runs over 15 million verifications a month, and lists checks across employment (including UAN and EPFO-based checks), education, court records, identity documents, address and drug screening (AuthBridge).

Why do companies spend money on background checks at all?

Companies pay because a meaningful share of candidate claims do not hold up. AuthBridge's Workforce Fraud Files 2025, covering October 2024 to March 2025, reported that 13% of employment verifications failed, 5% of education checks were flagged and 17% of resumes did not match actual credentials (AuthBridge). The same report put the IT and ITeS discrepancy rate at 9.46%, with BFSI at 11.69% and pharma at 16%.

These are one vendor's figures from its own caseload, not a national statistic, but they explain why employers treat BGV as a fixed cost of hiring rather than an optional extra.

How does the cost change by type of check?

The cost of a BGV package depends mostly on how the information is confirmed, not on the job title. The table shows how each check is usually confirmed and what drives its cost; exact amounts vary by agency and contract.

Check typeHow it is usually confirmedWhat drives cost and time
Identity (Aadhaar, PAN, passport)Database or document checksLowest; no third party to wait on
EmploymentPrevious employer HR, UAN/EPFO recordsMedium; depends on how fast the old employer replies
EducationUniversity or board, sometimes via DigiLocker/NADMedium; university fees are added
AddressDigital check or physical field visitHigher when a field visit is needed
Court and criminal recordsCourt database searchesLow to medium
Reference checksCalls to managers you namedLow cost, but slow if references are unreachable

NSR describes its empanelled agencies verifying at source: addresses through personal visits, qualifications with the college or university, and employment with the employer (NSR). Each of those steps involves a third party, which is where both cost and delay come from.

What do most guides on background verification cost get wrong?

Most guides quote a single "average cost per employee" with no source, which is misleading because the price you see depends on the bundle, the volume and the institution fees passed through. A startup verifying five hires a year and an IT services company verifying thousands a month do not pay the same per check, and Equal says as much when it ties its final rate to volume and turnaround (Equal).

The second mistake is implying that candidates routinely pay. In company-run hiring the employer pays. The genuine exceptions are NSR registration, which NSR says either side can pay, and checks a professional orders on their own record (NSR). If someone you have never met asks you to transfer money to "start your BGV", stop and verify the company first.

What should you do as a candidate before your BGV starts?

You cannot control the agency's fee, but you can control how smoothly and cheaply your own check goes. Fewer follow-ups mean fewer delays and fewer chances of an "unable to verify" remark.

  1. Collect your degree certificate, consolidated marksheets, and any provisional certificate in one PDF folder.
  2. Pull your EPFO passbook and check that your UAN shows the right employers and dates; see our EPF UAN activation guide if you have not activated it.
  3. Keep relieving and experience letters for every past job, plus the HR contact who issued them.
  4. Fill the BGV form with exact dates that match your documents, not rounded months.
  5. Tell your two references to expect a call.
  6. Reply to the agency within a day when it asks for something.

FAQ

How much does background verification cost in India?

There is no fixed national rate. NSR's Baseline Verification costs Rs 1,800 plus taxes and any institution fees as of October 2026, and the vendor Equal lists checks from Rs 350 each before GST. Large agencies such as AuthBridge price by quote. Total cost depends on how many checks are bundled, how many hires a company verifies and whether a university or field visit is involved.

Does the candidate have to pay for background verification?

Usually not. In company-run hiring the employer commissions and pays the agency. The exceptions are NSR registration, which NSR says either the employer or employee can pay (Rs 400 plus taxes), and checks a professional orders on their own NSR record. A stranger asking you to transfer a BGV fee before a confirmed offer is a common scam signal.

Which agencies do IT companies use for background verification?

Many IT and ITeS employers use agencies empanelled on NASSCOM's National Skills Registry. As of October 2026 NSR lists 24, including AuthBridge, KPMG, Krya, Matrix, First Advantage, IDfy (Baldor Technologies), OnGrid, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, SecureSearch and Verifacts. Your employer chooses the agency; the candidate does not.

Why do universities charge for degree verification?

Universities process verification requests from employers and agencies and charge a fee for the work. NIT Delhi charges Rs 1,000 per verification in India and waives it for police and government agencies, while IIIT Kottayam lists Rs 750. Agencies usually pass these fees to the employer, which is why vendor per-check prices exclude institution charges.

Why do companies run background checks if they cost money?

Because a share of claims fail. AuthBridge's Workforce Fraud Files 2025, covering October 2024 to March 2025, reported 13% of employment checks failed, 5% of education checks were flagged and the IT and ITeS discrepancy rate was 9.46%. These are one vendor's figures, but they show why employers treat BGV as a normal hiring cost.

Final thoughts

Background verification in India is paid for by the employer in almost every case, priced by quote, and run by a small set of agencies, many of them empanelled on NSR. The few public numbers, such as NSR's Rs 1,800 baseline check and university fees of Rs 750 to Rs 1,000, show that cost follows scope.
