IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk and SBI PO/Clerk: A Fresher's Guide
How IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO and SBI Clerk differ for freshers: who can apply, age limits, exam stages, final merit and a practical study plan.
Last updated: 12 October 2026 · By the Asuraa Team
Quick answer: All four exams need a graduate degree in any discipline. Per the 2026 notices, IBPS PO allows ages 20 to 30, IBPS Clerk 20 to 28, SBI PO 21 to 30 and SBI Clerk 20 to 28. PO exams have prelims, mains with a descriptive test, and an interview stage. Clerk exams have prelims and mains, then a local language test, with no interview. Apply only through ibps.in or SBI's official careers page.
Key takeaways
- IBPS PO, IBPS Clerk, SBI PO and SBI Clerk all accept a graduate degree in any discipline; there is no minimum percentage in the 2026 notices as reported.
- Age limits in the 2026 notices: IBPS PO 20 to 30, IBPS Clerk 20 to 28, SBI PO 21 to 30 and SBI Clerk 20 to 28, with relaxation for reserved categories.
- PO exams have prelims, mains with a descriptive test and an interview stage. Clerk exams end with mains and a local language test, with no interview.
- IBPS conducts exams for several public sector banks through ibps.in, while SBI runs its own recruitment through its official careers page.
- The prelims syllabus overlaps across all four exams, so one plan built on quant, reasoning and English covers the first stage of each.
The four exams in one line each
- IBPS PO: the Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS) recruits Probationary Officers and Management Trainees for participating public sector banks such as Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and Punjab National Bank.
- IBPS Clerk: IBPS recruits Customer Service Associates (clerks) for the same group of banks, with vacancies listed state by state.
- SBI PO: State Bank of India recruits its own Probationary Officers.
- SBI Clerk: SBI recruits Junior Associates (Customer Support and Sales), also state-wise.
For the 2026 cycle, reports of the official notices put the IBPS PO notice on 1 July 2026, SBI PO on 18 June 2026 and IBPS Clerk on 27 July 2026. SBI also issued a Junior Associate notice on 7 August 2026, described as a special backlog drive for reserved categories. Vacancy numbers are revised during the cycle, so check the current figure on the official site.

Notes for freshers:
- No percentage cut-off is reported in these notices. A pass in graduation from a recognised university is enough.
- Relaxations: reports of the IBPS notices list 5 years for SC/ST, 3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) and 10 years for PwBD. Check your category's row in the notification.
- SBI PO attempt limits: reports of the 2026 notice say 6 attempts for General/EWS and 9 for OBC, with no limit for SC/ST. Only appearing in the mains counts as an attempt.
- Clerk posts are state-specific. You apply for one state and must know its official language, or clear the language test.
Exam stages and how merit is decided
IBPS PO
- Prelims: 100 questions in 60 minutes on English, quantitative aptitude and reasoning. Qualifying only.
- Mains: objective sections on reasoning, data analysis, general and banking awareness and English, plus a descriptive test (letter and essay writing).
- Interview, after a mandatory personality test. Reports of the 2026 notice give a final merit split of 80% mains and 20% interview.
SBI PO
- Prelims: 100 marks in 60 minutes on English, quant and reasoning. Qualifying only.
- Mains: objective test of 200 marks plus a descriptive test, written on the same day.
- Phase III: a psychometric test, a group exercise and an interview. Reports of the 2026 notice give a merit split of 75% mains and 25% Phase III.
IBPS Clerk and SBI Clerk
- Prelims: 100 marks in 60 minutes on English, numerical ability and reasoning.
- Mains: general and financial awareness, English, reasoning and computer aptitude, and quantitative aptitude. Your mains score decides the merit list.
- Local language proficiency test: qualifying. SBI exempts candidates who studied the language in Class 10 or 12, as per its notices.
Objective tests in all four exams carry negative marking of one quarter of the question's marks for each wrong answer, as reported for 2026.
PO or Clerk: how they differ as careers
| PO (officer) | Clerk (associate) | |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Branch operations, credit, supervision | Cash, deposits, customer service |
| Posting | Anywhere in India | Usually within the state you applied for |
| Probation | Typically includes training and rotation | Shorter induction |
| Growth | Officer scale promotions | Internal exams to move into officer cadre |
Pay depends on the bank, posting city and allowances, so read the pay section of the notification rather than social media claims. If you are also looking at private banks, our guide on banking jobs in private banks explains the roles and hiring process there.
A five-month study plan
This plan works for both PO and Clerk because the prelims syllabus is shared.
- Month 1: Foundations. Simplification, number series, percentages, ratio, averages and profit and loss. Daily reading of one newspaper editorial for English.
- Month 2: Reasoning and DI. Puzzles, seating arrangements, inequalities, syllogisms, and basic data interpretation (tables, bar and pie charts).
- Month 3: Mock tests. Three prelims mocks a week. Analyse speed and accuracy section by section, because sectional time limits apply.
- Month 4: Mains level. Harder puzzles, caselet DI, banking awareness (RBI functions, monetary policy terms, financial inclusion schemes) and current affairs of the last six months.
- Month 5: Descriptive and interview. For PO, write one letter and one essay a week and get them checked. Prepare answers on why banking, your graduation subject and your home state.
Our aptitude test preparation guide has quant and reasoning practice methods that carry over well to bank prelims.

Frequently asked questions
Can final-year students apply for IBPS and SBI exams?

Which is better for a fresher, PO or Clerk?
A PO joins as an officer with more responsibility, transfers and a faster career track. A Clerk works in customer-facing roles, usually within one state, and can move up through internal promotion exams. Many freshers write both.
Where do I apply for IBPS and SBI exams?
IBPS exams are announced on ibps.in. SBI posts its notices on the careers section of its official website, now at sbi.bank.in. Both use an online registration portal linked from those pages.
