Which technical skills should a business analyst learn?

Which soft skills matter most for a business analyst?

Communication and stakeholder handling matter as much as any tool. Naukri names verbal and written communication, active listening, stakeholder management, time management and problem-solving as soft skills.

DataCamp's business analyst skills guide, updated 6 December 2024, adds interpersonal and negotiation skills, described as building relationships across departments and managing discussions about scope, resources and conflict. It also lists adaptability and continuous learning.

These are hard to prove with a certificate. Show them with examples, such as a time you gathered needs from people who disagreed.

What is business knowledge, and why does it count?

Business knowledge is your understanding of how an organisation earns money, serves customers and runs its processes. Coursera lists business acumen, meaning an understanding of finance, accounting and operational principles, and industry expertise as skills that provide a competitive advantage.

The BABOK Guide also lists business knowledge as one of its six competency areas. In practice, a fresher can build it by choosing one setting, such as retail, banking or logistics, and learning how its main processes work.

What order should you learn business analyst skills in?

Learn in the order employers are most likely to test them. The sequence below is our own suggestion and not a formal standard.

1. Excel and clear writing. Practise summarising a dataset and writing a one-page recommendation.
2. Basic SQL. Learn to filter, join and aggregate tables so you can pull your own data.
3. One BI tool. Build a small dashboard in Power BI or Tableau from a public dataset.
4. Requirements and process mapping. Learn to write requirements and draw a process on one page.
5. One domain. Read how the processes of one industry work.
6. Extras. Add Python, Agile practice or AI tools once the core is solid, since DataCamp lists machine learning and AI basics among emerging skills.

How might these skills be tested in an interview?

Expect questions that ask you to describe a situation and to work through a small problem. This is our own observation, so treat it as a preparation prompt and not a promise about any employer.

Prepare two or three short stories that show communication, problem-solving and stakeholder handling, using the situation, task, action and result structure. Also be ready to explain one project end to end, including the question, the data or process you looked at, what you recommended and what you would change next time.

What do most guides on business analyst skills get wrong?

Many skill lists are accurate but unhelpful because they stop at the list. These are the common gaps.

• They give twenty skills with no order. A fresher needs a sequence, not an inventory.
• They treat tools as the whole job. The IIBA's framework puts tools and technology as one of six areas, next to thinking, behaviour, business knowledge and communication.
• They give no way to show the skill. A skill counts when a recruiter can see evidence of it on the page.
• They copy one another. Skill lists differ by employer and year, so read current postings for your target role.
