What is campus hiring?

Campus hiring is a recruitment process in which companies recruit students at their college, usually through the placement cell. Teerthanker Mahaveer University's placement guide, dated 9 April 2026, says companies visit the campus to recruit students for different positions based on skills, knowledge and performance in the selection process.

A guide from ASM's IBMR, a Pune management institute, adds that campus placements typically occur before final examinations. The terms campus placement, campus recruitment and campus hiring are used almost interchangeably.

How does campus hiring work step by step?

It follows a fixed sequence of stages, although companies vary the details. The ASM's IBMR guide lists seven stages, which we condense here with the student's view added.

  1. Pre-placement presentation. The company presents the organisation and its recruitment details.
  2. Qualifications review. Your eligibility is checked against the company's criteria.
  3. Written examination. Aptitude covering quantitative, logical and verbal skills.
  4. Group discussion. Communication and leadership are observed.
  5. Technical interview. Subject-specific knowledge is tested.
  6. Formal interview. The final interview round.
  7. Post-placement discussion. Offer letter and joining procedures.

Teerthanker Mahaveer University describes the same flow in four core phases: online aptitude test, group discussion, technical interview and HR interview. Not every company runs every round.

What does your college placement cell expect from you?

It expects registration, honest documents and attendance, and the rules are set by each college. Two published policies show the kind of rules that exist, and yours may differ.

The IUST placement policy states that students register at the start of the odd semester and that the university verifies academic details. It says the placement cell invites companies from September, companies submit job notification forms, and students must attend pre-placement talks and all shortlisted rounds or face debarment. It also says final-year students with a backlog of four or more courses cannot register.

The Agni College of Technology placement policy describes offer categories called General, Dream, Super Dream and Core, and gives students three days to decide between multiple offers. It also says pre-placement offers must be reported within 24 hours.

What eligibility criteria do companies set?

Each company sets its own, and they commonly include marks and stream. The ASM's IBMR guide says requirements typically include a minimum of 50 to 60 per cent in 10th and 12th, a CGPA between 7.5 and 8.0 and specific streams.

Treat those numbers as one college's description, not a rule. Ask your placement cell for the eligibility notice of each company before the drive so you can prepare early.

How do you prepare for each round?

Prepare each stage separately, starting with aptitude. Teerthanker Mahaveer University recommends daily aptitude practice of one to two hours, learning shortcuts and formulas, and taking mock tests to analyse weak areas.

StageWhat is assessedHow to prepare
Aptitude testLogical thinking, numerical ability, problem-solvingDaily timed practice and mock tests
Group discussionCommunication, leadership, teamworkFollow current news, practise speaking, listen actively
Technical interviewSubject knowledge and practical skillsRevise core subjects and explain your projects aloud
HR interviewPersonality fit, soft skillsResearch the company and practise common questions

Which skills do recruiters look for on campus?

The ASM's IBMR guide lists technical expertise in your discipline, English communication in speaking and writing, quantitative and logical aptitude, awareness of current affairs, presentation ability and problem-solving. It recommends mastering your subject, taking online aptitude tests, joining mock interviews and developing supplementary skills.

Here is a worked example, labelled as an illustration. A final-year student starts aptitude practice in the first month of the semester, attends every pre-placement talk, prepares a two-minute explanation for each project on the resume, and books a mock interview before her first shortlisted round.

What if you are not placed on campus?

You still have options, because campus is only one route. Teerthanker Mahaveer University points to off-campus placement, where you apply independently through job portals, company websites or networking instead of relying only on campus drives.

Two of the college policies we read do not spell out what happens to unplaced students, so ask your placement cell what support continues after the main season. Then use this plan.

  1. Ask the cell whether later drives, pooled drives or training support are available.
  2. Find out why you were rejected. Note the round where you were dropped, and fix that skill first.
  3. Apply off campus. Our guide to off campus jobs in India explains drives, referrals and eligibility.
  4. Keep building proof. Add a project, an internship or a short course.
  5. Stay safe. Never pay a fee to get a job.

What do most guides on campus hiring get wrong?

Many guides describe the company's process and stop. These are the gaps that cost students time.

  • They skip college rules. Registration, attendance, backlog and offer policies can decide whether you take part at all.
  • They assume one offer is the end. Some colleges restrict further drives after an offer, so learn your college's rule before you accept.
  • They treat campus as the only route. Off-campus hiring stays open when the campus season ends.
  • They give generic preparation. Each stage tests something different, so a single plan for everything wastes time.

FAQ

What is campus hiring in simple words?

Campus hiring is when companies recruit students at their college, usually through the placement cell. Teerthanker Mahaveer University says companies visit campus to recruit for different positions based on skills, knowledge and performance in the selection process. Stages usually include tests and interviews.

What are the stages of campus hiring?

A common sequence is a pre-placement presentation, eligibility check, written aptitude test, group discussion, technical interview, formal or HR interview and offer discussion, according to an ASM's IBMR guide. Companies may skip some rounds, so read each company's notice.

What is a pre-placement talk?

It is a presentation in which a company introduces itself and its recruitment details to students. The ASM's IBMR guide lists it as the first stage, and the IUST policy says students must attend these talks or face debarment. Attend to learn the role, process and dates.

Do colleges limit how many offers a student can take?

Some do. The IUST policy applies a one person, one job rule with limited exceptions, and Agni College of Technology gives students three days to decide between multiple offers. Policies differ by college, so read your placement policy before accepting any offer.

What should I do if I am not placed in campus hiring?

Do not stop. Ask your placement cell about later drives, then apply off campus through job portals, company websites and networking, as Teerthanker Mahaveer University suggests. Work out which round you missed, strengthen that skill and keep building projects.

How much aptitude practice is enough for campus placements?

There is no fixed amount. Teerthanker Mahaveer University suggests practising aptitude for one to two hours daily, learning shortcuts and taking mock tests to analyse weak areas. Adjust the time to your starting level and the difficulty of the tests your target companies use.

Final thoughts

Campus hiring rewards students who know their college rules, prepare stage by stage and keep options open. Read your placement policy early, practise for each round and start an off-campus search if the season ends without an offer.
