How to Become a Data Engineer in India as a Fresher

An eight-month, month-by-month data engineering roadmap for Indian freshers: SQL, Python, dbt, Spark, Airflow, a cloud warehouse and one end-to-end pipeline project.

Last updated: 23 October 2026 · By the Asuraa Team

Quick answer: To become a data engineer in India as a fresher, learn SQL first, then Python. Add dbt, Apache Spark, Apache Airflow and one cloud warehouse such as BigQuery, and prove it all with one end-to-end pipeline on real data. At 10-12 hours a week this takes about eight months. Asuraa's October 2026 job market report found Python in 35.3% and SQL in 20.1% of entry-level listings.

Key takeaways

  • A practical fresher data engineering path in India is SQL, then Python, dbt, Apache Spark, Apache Airflow and one cloud warehouse, in that order.
  • Asuraa's October 2026 job market report found Python named in 35.3% and SQL in 20.1% of entry-level job listings in India.
  • Google's BigQuery sandbox needs no credit card and gives 10 GiB of storage and 1 TiB of query processing a month, with tables expiring after 60 days.
  • Apache Spark 4.2.0 needs Python 3.10 or later for PySpark and Java 17, 21 or 25, and runs locally on a laptop for learning.
  • AWS recommends 2-3 years of data engineering experience for its Data Engineer Associate exam (DEA-C01, USD 150), so freshers should build projects before certifying.

How do you become a data engineer in India as a fresher?

You become a data engineer as a fresher by learning SQL and Python well, then Spark, Airflow and one cloud data warehouse, and showing all of them in one end-to-end pipeline project. Most freshers with a BTech, BCA, BSc or MCA can do this in about eight months of steady work. Recruiters for entry-level data roles in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune mostly test SQL, Python and pipeline thinking, not every tool on a long list.

The order matters more than the speed. Many fresher data engineering interviews still begin with SQL, which is why this roadmap starts there. Asuraa's October 2026 job market report found Python named in 35.3% of entry-level listings and SQL in 20.1%. Bengaluru alone had 43.6% of the open roles.

If you are still deciding whether the role suits you, read what a data engineer does first. Our tech career roadmaps hub compares it with neighbouring paths such as data analyst and ML engineer.

What is the month-by-month data engineer roadmap?

The plan below assumes about 10-12 hours a week alongside college or a job. Each month ends with something you can show.

MonthFocusWhat to learnProof of work by month end
1SQL foundationsSELECT, JOINs, GROUP BY, subqueries, CTEs on PostgreSQL50 solved queries on a real dataset, saved in Git
2Advanced SQL and modellingWindow functions, indexes, normalisation, star schema, fact and dimension tablesA star-schema design for an e-commerce or taxi dataset
3Python for dataFiles, functions, pandas, calling APIs with requests, reading Parquet, logging, virtual environmentsA script that pulls an API daily and writes clean files
4Transformations with dbtModels, ref(), tests, documentation, incremental modelsA dbt project with tests passing on your warehouse
5Apache SparkDataFrames, Spark SQL, partitions, joins, writing ParquetA PySpark job that processes several months of trip data
6Orchestration with AirflowDags, tasks, dependencies, schedules, retries, backfillsAn Airflow Dag that runs your Month 3 and 5 jobs in order

8Capstone and job huntData quality checks, README, architecture diagram, resume, mock interviewsOne end-to-end project live on GitHub, applications sent

Use Git and GitHub from the first month, so your commit history shows eight months of steady work.

What should you learn first, SQL or Python?

Learn SQL first, then Python. SQL is the language of every warehouse you will work in. Window functions in particular come up in data engineering screening rounds. The PostgreSQL documentation describes a window function as one that calculates across related rows without collapsing them into a single row, and its tutorial is a free, high-quality place to practise. Our guide on how to learn SQL for jobs has a practice plan.

Python comes second because data engineers use it as glue: pulling from APIs, moving files and writing Spark and Airflow code. You do not need advanced object-oriented design as a fresher. You do need clean functions, error handling, logging and comfort with pandas. For the job-focused path, see how to learn Python for jobs.

Which tools should a fresher data engineer focus on?

Focus on four tools: Spark for processing, Airflow for scheduling, dbt for transformations, and one cloud warehouse for storage and querying. Each of these has free official documentation.

  • Apache Spark. The Spark 4.2.0 documentation lists APIs in Java, Scala, Python and R (the R API is deprecated). PySpark needs Python 3.10 or later and Java 17, 21 or 25. Spark SQL, Structured Streaming and the pandas API on Spark are the parts most relevant to freshers. You can install PySpark from PyPI and run it locally on a laptop.
  • Apache Airflow. The Airflow documentation (stable 3.3.2) describes it as a platform for building, scheduling and monitoring workflows written in Python. It is best suited to batch jobs with a clear start and end. Learn Dags, task dependencies, retries and backfills.
  • dbt. The dbt docs explain that you write SQL select statements and dbt turns them into tables and views in your warehouse, with tests, documentation and version control. A free Developer plan on the hosted dbt platform and a free VS Code extension are available.
  • A cloud warehouse. Google's BigQuery sandbox needs no credit card. It gives you 10 GiB of storage and 1 TiB of query processing a month. Tables expire after 60 days, and DML and streaming are not supported. On AWS, the Free Tier currently gives new accounts up to USD 200 in credits over a six-month free plan, which is enough to try S3, Glue and Redshift Serverless carefully.

What project proves you are job-ready?

One end-to-end pipeline, built on real public data, proves more than five tutorial notebooks. Use this checklist.

  1. Ingest two real sources. Use monthly Parquet files from the NYC TLC trip record data, published monthly with about a two-month lag and with data dictionaries. Add a daily pull from the Open-Meteo forecast API for an Indian city, such as Bengaluru's coordinates. It needs no API key for non-commercial use.
  2. Land raw data unchanged in cloud storage or a local "raw" folder, partitioned by date.
  3. Clean and process with PySpark. Remove bad rows, standardise types and write Parquet.
  4. Model with dbt into a star schema (a trips fact table, plus date and zone dimensions), with at least five dbt tests.
  5. Orchestrate with Airflow. One Dag, daily schedule, retries, and a successful backfill of past months.
  6. Load into a warehouse and write three analysis queries, for example how weather relates to trip volume.
  7. Add data quality checks for row counts, null checks and freshness, and make the pipeline fail loudly when one breaks.
  8. Document it. A README with an architecture diagram, setup steps, the cost you incurred, and what you would change at ten times the data volume.

Example resume line (an example, not a template to copy word for word): "Built a daily batch pipeline on NYC taxi Parquet data and Open-Meteo weather data using PySpark, dbt and Airflow, loading a star schema into BigQuery with 12 dbt tests." Our data engineer resume guide for freshers shows how to word projects like this.

Do you need a certification to become a data engineer?

No, a certification is not required for fresher data engineering jobs in India. A strong project usually counts for more. Certifications help most once you can already build pipelines.

Know what each one expects before you pay. The AWS Certified Data Engineer Associate (DEA-C01) costs USD 150 and has 65 questions in 130 minutes. AWS recommends 2-3 years of data engineering experience and 1-2 years of hands-on AWS work. On Microsoft's side, the Fabric Data Engineer Associate (DP-700) covers ingesting and transforming data and running analytics solutions in Microsoft Fabric. Its price depends on your country.

What do most guides on becoming a data engineer get wrong?

Most guides give freshers a list of 25 tools (Kafka, Flink, Kubernetes, Hadoop, Terraform, three clouds) and imply you need all of them. You don't. Freshers are usually hired on SQL depth, Python fluency and one well-explained pipeline. Interviewers will go deep on why your Airflow task is idempotent, or why you partitioned a table by date. They rarely expect production Kafka experience from a fresher.

Two more corrections:

  • "Start with Hadoop." The official Spark docs now centre on Spark SQL, DataFrames and Spark Connect. Learn the concepts behind distributed processing through Spark rather than starting from older MapReduce tutorials.
  • "Get the AWS Data Engineer certification first." AWS's own recommended experience for DEA-C01 is two to three years. Passing it without hands-on work is possible, but interviewers will test that hands-on work.

How do you get your first data engineering job?

Apply to data engineer, ETL developer, data analyst and analytics engineer roles in parallel. Many Indian companies hire freshers into analyst or support roles that move into data engineering after a year. Practise with data engineer interview questions, especially SQL window functions, Spark joins and Airflow failure scenarios. FAQ

Can a fresher get a data engineer job in India?

Yes, though many companies hire freshers into data analyst, ETL developer or analytics engineer roles first and move them into data engineering later. A fresher with strong SQL, working Python and one end-to-end pipeline project using Spark, Airflow, dbt and a cloud warehouse is competitive for entry-level data roles, particularly in Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.

How long does it take to become a data engineer from scratch?

About eight months at 10-12 hours a week is a realistic plan for a graduate starting from scratch. That means two months on SQL and data modelling, one on Python, then a month each on dbt, Spark, Airflow and a cloud warehouse, with the final month on a capstone project and applications. Students who already know SQL can finish sooner.

Which cloud should an Indian fresher learn for data engineering?

Pick one cloud and learn it properly rather than three superficially. Google's BigQuery sandbox is the easiest to start with because it needs no credit card. AWS offers new accounts up to USD 200 in credits over a six-month free plan. Look at which cloud the job listings you want mention most, and choose that one.

Is coding required for data engineering?

Yes. Data engineers write SQL every day and use Python to build ingestion scripts, Spark jobs and Airflow Dags. Airflow's documentation itself notes that it defines workflows as code. You don't need competitive-programming-level algorithms as a fresher, but you do need clean, testable Python and strong SQL.

Should I do the AWS Data Engineer Associate certification as a fresher?

Only after you have built projects. AWS lists the Data Engineer Associate (DEA-C01) at USD 150 for 65 questions in 130 minutes, and recommends 2-3 years of data engineering experience plus 1-2 years on AWS. For a fresher, a documented pipeline project usually counts for more in interviews than this certification.

What is the difference between a data engineer and a data analyst?

A data engineer builds and maintains the pipelines and warehouses that move and store data reliably. A data analyst queries that data to answer business questions and builds dashboards. Both need SQL. Engineers add Python, Spark, orchestration and cloud infrastructure, while analysts focus more on statistics, Excel and BI tools such as Power BI.

Final thoughts

The fresher data engineering path is SQL, Python, dbt, Spark, Airflow and one cloud warehouse, all brought together in one documented pipeline on real data. Go deep on a few tools rather than wide on many, and keep your commits public as you go.
