What does SWAYAM say?

The page adds that learners who want a certificate must register for the final proctored exams, which "come at a fee" and are attended in person at designated centres on specified dates. It says NCS services are free of cost and that NCS does not charge any fee at any stage of registration, job application, interview processing and other employment-related services. What does Skill India Digital Hub say?

The official site was not readable by our tools, so we rely on a dated government release. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on 31 July 2024, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship described Skill India Digital Hub as a digital platform to synergise India's skill development, education, employment and entrepreneurship landscape.

The release says it offers industry-relevant courses, job opportunities, apprenticeships, entrepreneurship support and a learning management system with portable verified credentials. It also reported 752 online courses as of June 2024, so that number is out of date by now, and the live portal will show current figures.

How do you choose a free course?

Ask the same five questions of every course. This keeps you from collecting enrolments you never finish.

1. Who runs it, and where is that stated? Look for the institution on the course page.
2. What does it cost, including the certificate? Note any exam fee, centre and date.
3. Is the syllabus visible? If you cannot see the topics, you cannot judge fit.
