Quick answer: To earn PMP in India with a bachelor's degree, you need 3 years of project management experience within the last 10 years plus 35 hours of project management training. As of October 2026, PMI lists the exam as 180 questions in 240 minutes. Since July 2026, 26% of the exam covers the Business Environment domain. You renew every three years with 60 PDUs.
Key takeaways
- PMI requires 3 years of project management experience for bachelor's degree holders, 5 years for high-school graduates and 2 years for graduates of GAC-accredited programmes, all within the last 10 years.
- The PMP exam has 180 questions in 240 minutes with two 10-minute breaks, and candidates can attempt it up to three times in one year.
- From July 2026, PMI weights the PMP exam at 33% People, 41% Process and 26% Business Environment, up from 8% for Business Environment before.
- From 1 December 2026, live instructor-led PMP training counts towards the 35 hours only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an eligible accredited academic programme delivers it.
- PMP is renewed every three years with 60 PDUs, including at least 35 education PDUs and at least 8 in each Talent Triangle area.
PMP (Project Management Professional) is the project management certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI), and Indian job listings for project manager, delivery manager and programme manager roles often name it. It is not a fresher certification. You need years of real project leadership before you can even apply. This guide covers PMI's eligibility rules, the exam as it stands after the July 2026 update, the 35-hour training rule that changes on 1 December 2026, the costs to plan for, and how to keep the credential once you have it.
Who is eligible for PMP in India?
You are eligible for PMP if you have the project management experience PMI requires for your education level, gained within the last 10 years, plus 35 hours of project management training. The rules are the same worldwide, so Indian applicants follow the same tiers (PMI PMP page).
| Your highest education | Project management experience needed |
|---|---|
| High school diploma or equivalent (Class 12 in India) | 5 years |
| Associate's degree or vocational trade diploma | 4 years |
| Bachelor's degree or higher (BTech, BCom, BBA, BSc and so on) | 3 years |
| Bachelor's or postgraduate degree from a PMI GAC-accredited programme | 2 years |

A few rules decide whether your experience actually counts:
- The 10-year window. All the experience you claim must fall within the last 10 years.
- Overlapping months count once. PMI measures experience in months, not by project count. Two projects running January to March and February to May give you five months, not seven (PMI blog, August 2026).
- Each project is listed separately on the application.
- The work must be leading project work. A "project coordinator" or "team lead" title can qualify if you led project activities, and a "project manager" title does not automatically make all your work count.
PMI's guidance also lists what does not count: college or degree projects, academic research, personal events, and routine operational or admin tasks (PMI blog). An Indian software engineer who has run releases, migrations or client rollouts end to end may qualify. Someone who only took tickets in a support queue usually will not.
What is the PMP exam pattern in 2026?
The PMP exam has 180 questions and runs for 240 minutes (4 hours), with two 10-minute breaks (PMI). It tests three domains:
| Domain | Weight before July 2026 | Weight from July 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| People | 42% | 33% |
| Process | 50% | 41% |
| Business Environment | 8% | 26% |

The jump in Business Environment matters most. PMI says the updated exam, launched in July 2026, puts more weight on outcomes, value and business impact. It also adds topics such as AI, sustainability and stakeholder engagement in scenario questions (PMI). If you are using study material written for the older outline, check it covers these areas.
You can take the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre, which PMI recommends, or online from home. The online option needs a system check, a private room and a valid photo ID (PMI). If you fail, PMI allows up to three attempts in one year.
How does the 35-hour training rule work, and what changes on 1 December 2026?
You need at least 35 hours of formal project management training, finished before you submit your application. An active CAPM certification also meets the requirement (PMI blog, September 2026).
What counts:
- College or university project management courses (only the project management hours)
- Employer-sponsored project management training
- Self-paced courses that include an end-of-course assessment
- Hours from more than one qualifying course, added together
What does not count by itself: reading books, taking practice exams or studying on your own. Training hours do not expire, so a course you took years ago can still count.
The 1 December 2026 change: from that date, live instructor-led training counts only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner (ATP) or an eligible accredited academic programme delivers it. Self-paced, on-demand training can still come from any provider if it matches the current exam outline. Training you finish before 1 December 2026 stays valid under the old rules (PMI, PMI blog).
For Indian candidates this matters because many local bootcamps sell live weekend PMP classes. If you plan to take one after 1 December 2026, ask the institute for proof that it is a PMI Authorized Training Partner before you pay.
How do you apply for PMP, step by step?
The PMP process has four stages: check eligibility, finish training, apply, then pay and book the exam (PMI).
- Check your experience. Count your project months within the last 10 years against the tier for your degree. Remove overlapping months.
- Complete 35 training hours. Keep your certificate, transcript or course record. You do not upload these, but PMI can ask for them in an audit (PMI blog).
- Write your application. For each project, describe the goal, start and end dates, your leadership role, who you worked with, the activities you led and the outcome (PMI blog). Be specific and do not overstate your role.
- Pay the exam fee once your application is accepted, then schedule the exam at a test centre or online.
- Prepare and sit the exam. PMI's own options include the self-paced PMP Exam Prep Course, PMI Study Hall and a 180-question timed PMP Practice Exam with unlimited retakes (PMI blog, October 2026).
PMI may audit any application. Keep evidence of every project and course you list, and make sure a manager or client could confirm the dates and your role.
How much does PMP cost in India?
PMP costs are the exam fee, the 35 hours of training, optional study tools, and renewal every three years. PMI charges the exam fee after your application is accepted, and the amount depends on membership and region. Check the current rupee or dollar price in your PMI account before you budget.
The main lever on cost is PMI membership. PMI South Asia says members get up to 30% off certifications, including renewals, as well as discounts on study resources and eLearning (PMI South Asia). The PMP Handbook states that membership is not required to earn PMP. Compare the membership fee with the discount you will get on the exam and on future renewals.
Training fees vary widely. Indian providers offer everything from self-paced courses to week-long classroom batches in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Delhi NCR. Choose on whether the course qualifies under PMI's rules, not on price alone. PMI warns against providers that guarantee you will pass (PMI blog).
How do you keep PMP once you pass?
You keep PMP by earning 60 professional development units (PDUs) every three years and paying a renewal fee (PMI).
| Requirement | Rule |
|---|---|
| Total PDUs | 60 per 3-year cycle |
| Education PDUs | At least 35 |
| Giving Back to the Profession | At most 25 |
| Talent Triangle | At least 8 PDUs each in Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen |

Training hours and PDUs are different things. The 35 hours get you eligible to apply. PDUs keep the certification active after you pass.
What do most guides on PMP certification get wrong?
Most guides get three things wrong. They still describe the old exam, they treat any 35-hour course as valid, and they count experience by the number of projects.
- Old domain weights. Many guides still say Business Environment is 8% of the exam. Since July 2026 it is 26% (PMI), so preparation that skips business value, strategy and stakeholder topics now leaves a big gap.
- "Any 35-hour certificate works." From 1 December 2026, live classes count only from Authorized Training Partners or accredited academic programmes. A course called "35 PDUs" is not automatically valid either (PMI blog).
- Counting projects instead of months. Five overlapping projects in one year are still 12 months of experience. Applicants who add up project durations often overclaim, and that is risky in an audit.
There is one more misconception. PMP is not a ticket to a first job. It confirms experience you already have. If you are early in your career, PMI's CAPM is the entry-level option: it needs a secondary education and 23 hours of project management education, and the exam has 150 questions in 180 minutes (PMI CAPM).
Is PMP worth it for Indian professionals?
PMP is worth it if you already lead projects and want delivery, programme or project manager roles. It is worth much less if you are a fresher or plan to stay in a purely technical track.
Where it helps:
- Moving from team lead to project or delivery manager in IT services, GCCs, construction, infrastructure and consulting
- Client-facing roles where buyers expect certified project managers
- Showing that your experience meets a known global standard
Where it helps less:
- Fresher and early-career roles, where you cannot meet the experience rule anyway
- Purely agile product teams, where hiring managers may prefer a Scrum credential. Our Scrum Master certification guide comparing CSM and PSM covers that route.
- Engineering-track promotions, where technical depth matters more
If you are moving towards product roles, read our guide on how to become a product manager in India before choosing between PMP and an agile route. Once you hold the credential, add it with your project outcomes using the advice in how to list skills on a resume, and use the behavioral interview STAR method to talk about the projects behind it.
FAQ
What is the eligibility for PMP certification in India?

With a high-school diploma you need 5 years, with an associate's degree 4 years, and with a GAC-accredited degree 2 years. The experience must fall within the last 10 years, and you also need 35 hours of project management training or an active CAPM.
How many questions are in the PMP exam?
The PMP exam has 180 questions to answer in 240 minutes, with two 10-minute breaks. Since the July 2026 update, the questions are weighted 33% People, 41% Process and 26% Business Environment. You can take it at a Pearson VUE test centre or online from home, and you get up to three attempts in one year.
Can a fresher do PMP in India?
No. A fresher cannot meet PMP's experience requirement. Even with a degree, PMI asks for at least two to three years of project management experience, depending on the programme. Freshers interested in project management can look at PMI's CAPM. It needs a secondary education and 23 hours of project management education, and the exam has 150 questions in 180 minutes.
Does any 35-hour PMP course count?
Not always. The course must give formal project management instruction aligned with the current exam outline, and self-paced courses need an end-of-course assessment. From 1 December 2026, live instructor-led training counts only if a PMI Authorized Training Partner or an eligible accredited academic programme delivers it. Training finished before that date stays valid.
Is PMI membership required for PMP?
No, membership is not required to earn PMP. PMI says members get up to 30% off certifications, including renewals, plus discounts on study resources. Compare the membership fee with the savings on your exam and renewal before you decide. The exam fee depends on membership and region, so check the current price in your PMI account.
How do I renew my PMP certification?
PMP runs on a three-year cycle. To renew it, you earn 60 professional development units (PDUs) and pay the renewal fee. At least 35 PDUs must be Education, at most 25 can be Giving Back to the Profession, and you need at least 8 in each Talent Triangle area: Ways of Working, Power Skills and Business Acumen.
