Quick answer: Many PSUs, including NTPC, POWERGRID, IOCL, ONGC, BHEL, GAIL, SAIL and AAI, hire engineering graduates as Engineer Trainees using GATE scores. You write GATE in your branch, apply separately on each PSU's careers page when it advertises, get shortlisted on GATE marks, then clear a GD or interview and a medical. Most PSUs ask trainees to sign a service bond.

Key takeaways

  • PSUs such as NTPC, POWERGRID, IOCL, ONGC, BHEL, GAIL, SAIL, HAL and AAI have used GATE scores to hire Engineer Trainees and Management Trainees.
  • Writing GATE is not an application. You must apply separately to each PSU on its own careers page, usually after the GATE results come out.
  • GATE marks usually carry most of the weight. In POWERGRID's 2026 advertisement it was 85%, with group discussion at 3% and interview at 12%.
  • Most PSUs set a minimum degree percentage, an upper age limit and accept a GATE score from one specific year only, so read each notice.
  • Expect a service agreement bond. POWERGRID's 2026 bond was Rs 5 lakh for general candidates, with one year of training and three years of service.

Which PSUs hire through GATE

Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are government-owned companies in power, oil and gas, steel, mining, defence manufacturing and infrastructure. Many of them recruit Engineer Trainees (ETs), Graduate Engineer Trainees (GETs) or Management Trainees (MTs) using GATE scores instead of running their own written test.

PSUs that have used GATE scores for hiring include:

  • Power: NTPC, POWERGRID, Grid Controller of India (GRID-INDIA), Chenab Valley Power Projects, Damodar Valley Corporation, NPCIL
  • Oil and gas: IOCL, ONGC, GAIL, Engineers India Ltd (EIL)
  • Steel, mining and metals: SAIL, RINL, Coal India, NMDC, NALCO, NLC India
  • Manufacturing and defence: BHEL, HAL, ECIL, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders
  • Infrastructure and others: Airports Authority of India (AAI), NHAI, BSNL, CRIS

This list changes every year. Some PSUs skip GATE in a given year, some run their own exam instead, and new ones join. Treat it as a starting watchlist, not a guarantee.

Which branches are covered

Most GATE-based PSU hiring is for core branches:

GATE paperBranchSectors that typically hire
MEMechanicalPower, oil and gas, steel, heavy manufacturing
EEElectricalPower generation and transmission, manufacturing
ECElectronicsTransmission, defence manufacturing, airports
CECivilPower projects, highways, airports
CSComputer ScienceTransmission, railways IT, airports
CHChemicalRefining, oil and gas, petrochemicals
INInstrumentationRefining, oil and gas, power plants

Companies and branches vary by year. Always match the GATE paper to the discipline code in the PSU's advertisement. A Mechanical graduate who wrote the CS paper, for example, is usually not eligible for a Mechanical ET post.

How the selection process works

The steps are similar across PSUs, though weightage and stages differ.

  1. Write GATE in your branch. GATE 2027 is organised by IIT Madras, with exams on 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 February 2027.
  2. Watch for PSU advertisements. Many PSUs publish notices around GATE registration time or after results, asking you to register with your GATE registration number.
  3. Apply on the PSU's own careers page. There is no single common form. Each PSU has its own portal, fee and deadline.
  4. Shortlisting on GATE marks. The PSU ranks applicants by GATE marks, discipline-wise and category-wise.
  5. Group discussion, interview or assessment. Some PSUs hold a GD, some only an interview, and some add a psychometric or behavioural test.
  6. Document verification and medical exam. Your offer depends on clearing the pre-employment medical as per company norms.
  7. Training, then regular posting. You join as a trainee and are absorbed after training.

Here is how one recent notice set the weightage. In POWERGRID's Engineer Trainee advertisement (CC/04/2025, for GATE 2026):

StageWeightage
GATE 2026 marks (out of 100)85%
Group discussion3% (no qualifying marks)
Personal interview12% (qualifying marks apply)

Other PSUs use different splits, so read each notice.

Eligibility rules you must check

Before you apply, check these lines in every advertisement:

  • Degree and percentage. POWERGRID's 2026 notice asked for a full-time B.E./B.Tech/B.Sc (Engg.) with at least 60%. Other PSUs set their own minimum.
  • Age limit. POWERGRID's limit was 28 years as on 31 December 2025 for general candidates, with category relaxations. Other PSUs set their own limits, so check before you plan a second GATE attempt.
  • GATE year. POWERGRID accepted only GATE 2026 and said scores from 2025 or earlier were not valid. GATE scores are valid for three years for admissions, but PSUs usually want the current year's score.
  • Final-year students. POWERGRID allowed final-year students if results were expected by a set date and they had 60% up to the pre-final exam.

Bonds and service agreements

Most PSUs ask new trainees to sign a service agreement bond. This is normal and legal, but you should know the numbers before you join.

In POWERGRID's 2026 advertisement, the bond was Rs 5,00,000 for General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates and Rs 2,50,000 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Trainees had to complete one year of training and then serve at least three years. Training pay in that notice was a basic pay of Rs 40,000 plus IDA, HRA and perks.

Bond amounts and periods differ across PSUs. If you are also holding a private offer, compare the bond terms side by side. Our explainer on service agreement bonds covers what to look for in the clause.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Aim for marks, not just qualifying. PSU shortlists depend on GATE marks, and the cutoff changes with the number of posts and applicants each year. A GATE qualifying score is often not enough.
  • Keep a PSU tracker. List each PSU, its GATE paper code, age limit, minimum percentage and application window. Deadlines are short and spread across the year.
  • Keep documents ready. Degree certificates, mark sheets, category and EWS certificates in the right format, and your GATE scorecard. Wrong-format certificates are a common reason for rejection at verification.
  • Prepare for the interview. Revise your core subjects, your final-year project and basic knowledge of the PSU's business. Our managerial round interview questions guide helps with the non-technical part.
  • Read the medical standards. Some posts, especially field and plant roles, have specific medical norms.
  • Do not rely on one route. Apply to private core jobs and other government exams in parallel.

Keep private options open while you wait

PSU hiring cycles are slow. Between GATE in February, results in March and final offers months later, most candidates spend a long time waiting. Many freshers take a private core or IT job during this period and switch if a PSU offer comes through.

You can browse verified fresher jobs on asuraa.in. Every company is checked before posting and apply links are rechecked every morning, so you do not waste time on dead listings. For a wider comparison, see government job vs private IT job.

Always confirm eligibility, dates and bond terms in the official PSU notification before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

Is a GATE score alone enough to get a PSU job?

No. GATE marks get you shortlisted and usually carry most of the weight, but you still need to clear the PSU's group discussion or interview, document verification and a pre-employment medical exam.

Can final-year students apply to PSUs through GATE?

Often yes. POWERGRID's 2026 advertisement allowed final-year students whose results were expected by a set date, if they had 60% up to the pre-final exam. Each PSU sets its own rule, so check the notice.

Is my GATE score valid for PSU recruitment for three years?

GATE scores are valid for three years for admissions, but PSUs usually accept only one year's score. POWERGRID's 2026 notice accepted only GATE 2026 and said 2025 or earlier scores were not valid.

What happens if I break a PSU service bond?

You pay the bond amount written in your agreement. The amount and service period differ by PSU and by category, so read the bond clause in the advertisement before you accept the offer.

Which GATE paper should I write for a PSU job?

Write the paper that matches your degree branch, such as ME, EE, EC, CE, CS or CH. Each PSU lists the GATE paper it accepts for each discipline, and a mismatched paper usually makes you ineligible.
