Railway Jobs for Freshers: RRB NTPC, ALP and Group D Explained

A clear guide to railway jobs for freshers: who can apply for RRB NTPC, ALP and Group D, the CBT stages, how CEN notices work and how to avoid job scams.

Quick answer: Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) hire through Centralised Employment Notices (CENs). RRB NTPC has graduate posts like Station Master and undergraduate posts like Junior Clerk for Class 12 pass candidates. ALP (CEN 01/2026) needs Class 10 plus ITI or an engineering diploma. Group D or Level 1 (CEN 09/2025) needs Class 10, ITI or NAC. Selection is by CBT, then skill or aptitude tests or PET, DV and medical.

Key takeaways

  • RRB NTPC has two levels: graduate posts such as Station Master and Goods Train Manager, and undergraduate posts such as Junior Clerk for Class 12 pass candidates.
  • Assistant Loco Pilot (CEN 01/2026) needs Class 10 plus an ITI certificate or a three-year engineering diploma; reports give an age range of 18 to 30.
  • Group D or Level 1 (CEN 09/2025) is open to Class 10 pass, ITI or NAC holders, with a CBT, a physical efficiency test, document checks and a medical.
  • Every recruitment is announced as a numbered CEN. Read the full CEN on your regional RRB website and apply only through the official RRB portal.
  • Railways recruit only on merit through computer-based tests. Anyone offering a railway job for money is a tout, and the RRBs warn against them.

How railway recruitment works

Indian Railways recruits most non-gazetted staff through 21 Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs), each covering a region, such as RRB Chennai, RRB Mumbai or RRB Bhopal.

Every recruitment is announced as a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) with a number and year, for example CEN 01/2026. All RRBs publish the same CEN, each with its own vacancy table. You choose one RRB when you apply, and you compete for that RRB's vacancies.

RRB NTPC: graduate and undergraduate posts

NTPC stands for Non-Technical Popular Categories. There are two separate exams.

Graduate level (CEN 06/2025)

  • Posts: Station Master, Goods Train Manager, Traffic Assistant, Chief Commercial cum Ticket Supervisor, Junior Account Assistant cum Typist, Senior Clerk cum Typist.
  • Qualification: a bachelor's degree from a recognised university. Some posts have extra conditions.
  • Age: the base limit is 18 to 33, counted on 1 January 2026. One report says this CEN gave a one-time relaxation of the upper limit, so check the notice.

Undergraduate level (CEN 07/2025)

  • Posts: Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk, Commercial cum Ticket Clerk.
  • Qualification: Class 12 pass. Accounts Clerk cum Typist requires commerce, as reported.
  • Age: 18 to 30, counted on 1 January 2026.

NTPC stages

  1. CBT 1: a screening test of 100 questions in 90 minutes on mathematics, general intelligence and reasoning, and general awareness.
  2. CBT 2: 120 questions in 90 minutes on the same subjects at a higher level. This decides merit.
  3. Skill or aptitude test, by post: a typing test for typist posts (reported as 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi, qualifying only) and a Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBAT) for Station Master and Traffic Assistant.
  4. Document verification and medical examination.

Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP)

ALPs assist loco pilots in running trains. It is a technical post with strict medical standards.

  • CEN: 01/2026, released in May 2026.
  • Qualification: Class 10 plus an ITI certificate in a notified trade, or Class 10 plus a three-year engineering diploma. The notice lists the accepted trades and branches.
  • Age: reported as 18 to 30, with relaxations for reserved categories.

ALP stages

  1. CBT 1: 75 questions in 60 minutes, screening only, with one third of a mark deducted per wrong answer, as reported.
  2. CBT 2: Part A (maths, reasoning, basic science and engineering, general awareness) and Part B, a trade-based qualifying paper.
  3. CBAT: a computer-based aptitude test with a minimum score requirement.
  4. Document verification and medical examination.

Group D / Level 1

Level 1 posts are the entry level in railways. CEN 09/2025 listed posts such as Pointsman-B, Track Maintainer, and Assistant posts in workshops, signal and telecom, carriage and wagon, and traction.

  • Qualification: Class 10 pass, or ITI, or a National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC), depending on the post. The qualification must be complete by the closing date.
  • Age: reported as starting at 18, counted on 1 January 2026. Sources differ on the upper limit, so read it in the CEN.

Group D stages

  1. CBT: 100 questions in 90 minutes on general science, mathematics, general intelligence and reasoning, and general awareness.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): weight-lifting and running tasks, with standards set in the CEN.
  3. Document verification and medical examination.

A simple preparation plan

The CBT syllabus overlaps across all three exams, so one plan covers most of it.

  1. Weeks 1 to 4: Class 10 level maths (number system, percentages, ratio, time and work, mensuration) and basic reasoning.
  2. Weeks 5 to 8: General science from NCERT Class 9 and 10 for Group D and ALP. General awareness for all: history, geography, polity, economy and railway basics.
  3. Weeks 9 to 12: Solve previous papers from the official RRB answer keys and question papers released after earlier CBTs.
  4. Weeks 13 onward: Two to three full mocks a week, plus trade theory for ALP, typing practice for NTPC typist posts, and running practice for Group D PET.

How to stay safe from railway job scams

Railway job fraud is common. The RRB Bhopal website, for example, warns candidates to beware of touts who promise jobs through influence and to ignore notices circulating on social media.

  1. Check every notice on an official RRB website ending in .gov.in, such as rrbbhopal.gov.in or rrbchennai.gov.in.
  2. Apply only through the application portal linked from the official RRB site.
  3. Never pay anyone for a "direct appointment", "TC job" or "quota seat". There is no such route.
  4. Ignore WhatsApp messages with "joining letters". Real selection results appear on RRB websites.

Keep a job search running alongside

Railway exam cycles from CEN to joining can take a year or more. On asuraa.in you can find verified fresher jobs for graduates, Class 12 pass, ITI and diploma holders, with apply links checked every morning, so you can earn while you wait for results.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fresher with only Class 12 apply for railway jobs?

Yes. RRB NTPC undergraduate posts such as Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Trains Clerk and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk need Class 12. Group D needs only Class 10, ITI or NAC. Check the CEN for post-specific rules.

What is a CEN in railway recruitment?

CEN stands for Centralised Employment Notice. It is the official notification for one recruitment, numbered by sequence and year, such as CEN 01/2026 for ALP. All RRBs publish the same CEN with their own vacancy tables.

Which is the official website to apply for RRB exams?

Each of the 21 RRBs has its own official .gov.in website, such as rrbbhopal.gov.in or rrbchennai.gov.in. Applications go through the common portal linked from those sites. Do not trust lookalike domains or social media links.

Is there negative marking in RRB exams?

Yes, RRB computer-based tests usually deduct one third of a mark for each wrong answer, as reported for the ALP CBT. The exact rule is printed in each CEN.

Can someone get me a railway job through contacts?

No. The RRBs state that selection is purely on merit and warn candidates about touts who promise jobs through influence. Anyone asking for money for a railway job is running a scam.
