What is the software engineer roadmap for India?

The roadmap is six stages that run from your first programming language to interview practice. Scaler's SDE roadmap, dated 15 July 2026, describes the same six-phase shape and estimates six to nine months to become job-ready.

What are the six stages?

Each stage below ends with something you can show. The durations in the second column are Scaler's suggested ranges, and the proof column is our own suggestion.

Scaler names C++, Java or Python as language options, and lists about 160 curated problems as the stage 2 target. Use its numbers as a guide to relative effort: DSA is the largest block.

Which route should you take: degree, bootcamp or self-study?

The best route is the one you can finish. Naukri Campus outlines three: a three to four year bachelor's degree in computer science or software engineering, a three to six month bootcamp, or one to two years of dedicated self-study with portfolio building.

Which language should you learn first?

Pick the one you will actually use for projects and practice, because depth matters more than choice. Naukri Campus lists Java, Python, C++ and JavaScript among the technical languages for software engineers.

Tech Interview Handbook advises choosing for coding interviews the language "you use the most and you're the most comfortable with". Once you have picked, stay with it through stages 1 to 4 before adding a second.

How much DSA do you need, and how do you pace it?

Most roadmaps treat DSA as the biggest block, and interviews often test it. Tech Interview Handbook's interview guide (updated 7 August 2026) suggests a coding-interview preparation timeframe of about three months at around 11 hours a week, and says to study patterns and not memorise answers.

Scaler's plan gives 12 to 16 weeks for DSA. The two estimates are close, which is a useful sign, though both come with assumptions about your starting point. Our interview questions post shows worked examples of typical problems.

How do you build proof of work at each stage?

Build small, then build one project a stranger could run. Naukri Campus suggests a strong portfolio and open-source contributions as the main evidence for people without a degree.

Where can you learn for free?

India has a free, structured option in NPTEL. Its site says it is an online learning initiative by the IITs and IISc, funded by the Ministry of Education, with 3,200 plus courses available for self-study.

The NPTEL site also mentions its link with SWAYAM. It does not say on the home page which courses are free or what certification costs, so check the course page before you enrol.

What do most guides on the software engineer roadmap get wrong?

Many roadmaps are tidy checklists that hide how personal the path is. These are the common gaps.

They give one confident timeline. Estimates range widely by source, so plan with a range and adjust.
They skip the starting point. A final-year student and a career switcher need different first steps.
They stack topics without proof. A roadmap that ends in knowledge and not in projects leaves you with nothing to show.
They quote pay to motivate you. Salaries depend on company, city and level, and many published figures have no source, so we do not give any here.

How long does it take to become a software engineer?

It depends on the route. Scaler estimates six to nine months of focused study for job readiness, while Naukri Campus lists three to six months for a bootcamp, one to two years for self-study and three to four years for a degree. Treat all of these as ranges.
