What are software engineering internships?
Software engineering internships are short, structured placements where students work with a development team on real software. Indeed India (updated 3 December 2025) says software developer interns assess development situations, identify problems, develop solutions and create software.
This guide shows which programmes exist for different years of study, which skills to prepare, and how to plan an application. It is written for Indian students and freshers, and it does not quote stipends because we could not find a reliable, dated source for them.
Which software engineering internship programmes should students know about?
A few named programmes are aimed at early-year students, and they are useful as reference points even if you do not apply to them. The table lists what each source says.

Microsoft's page says the programme puts students in pods on real product team projects covering design, build and quality. It lists an introductory computer science course and one semester of calculus as requirements, and says the India version focuses on software engineering.
Google Summer of Code says contributors work with an open source organisation under mentors, and that a small stipend is provided. It advises contacting the organisations you are interested in early, before you submit a proposal.
What skills do software engineering internships require?
Employers usually want one programming language you can use well, problem-solving ability and basic knowledge of databases and operating systems. Indeed India lists these among the skills for software developer interns: programming language proficiency, problem-solving, attention to detail, database knowledge, operating system understanding, testing procedures and interpersonal skills.
Expect some technical screening. Naukri Campus says Google's process includes an initial technical phone screen followed by two to three interview rounds.

How do you get a software engineering internship?
Follow a sequence that builds evidence before you apply. This adapts the seven steps in Indeed India's guide.
- Choose a programming language. Pick one, such as Python, Java or JavaScript, and go deep before adding another.
- Research employers. Read what different companies build, and note which ones run internship programmes.
- Know your skills. List what you can do today and what a target posting asks for.
- Create a portfolio. Publish two or three finished projects with a clear README.
- Prepare for the interview process. Practise coding problems and explaining your design choices.
- Craft a resume. Keep it to one page, and lead with projects and skills.
- Proofread and apply. Tailor each application, and track deadlines.
Naukri Campus says Google typically opens internship applications in the fall, September and October, for the following summer. Since it is late September now, check the careers pages of employers you like and set alerts.
Which route suits your year of study?
The right route depends on how far along you are, so use this decision framework. It is our suggestion, built on the programmes above, not a sourced rule.

Indeed India notes that finding a software developer internship may be challenging, partly because of education requirements and company selectivity. Treat a rejection as information about what to strengthen, and apply to a mix of well-known and lesser-known employers.
How do you check that a software internship is real?
Check the company, the recruiter and the terms before you share documents. Never pay a fee to get an internship, and be wary of "training" that turns into an offer only after you pay.

This is an invented example, not a real case. Arjun is a second-year B.Tech student who wants a software internship next summer.
From October to December he learns Python properly and finishes two projects: a small web app with a database and a command-line tool with tests. In January he writes a one-page resume and puts both projects on GitHub with a README. From February he applies to early-year programmes and to startups, follows up politely and practises one coding problem a day.
He also spends a few weekends reading beginner-friendly open source issues, because Google Summer of Code says early conversations with an organisation improve your chances. If one path does not work out, the projects remain useful for the next application.
What do most guides on software engineering internships get wrong?
Most guides give a list of companies and a generic tip sheet. These gaps matter more.
- They list famous companies only. Programmes like STEP and Explore Microsoft are aimed at first- and second-year students only, so a plan should include other options too.
- They quote stipend numbers without sources. We do not, because we could not verify a dated, reliable figure for software internships.
- They skip the year-of-study question. What suits a first-year student is different from what suits a final-year student.
- They treat coding practice as the whole preparation. Indeed India also stresses a portfolio, a tailored resume and knowing your own skills.
- They ignore open source. Google Summer of Code shows an online, mentored route that does not depend on your college campus.
