SSC CGL and CHSL for Freshers: Eligibility, Exams and Prep Plan

A plain guide to SSC CGL and CHSL for freshers: eligibility, age limits, exam stages, posts, a six-month study plan and how to apply safely on ssc.gov.in.

Last updated: 12 October 2026 · By the Asuraa Team

Quick answer: SSC CGL is for graduates and fills Group B and C posts such as Assistant Section Officer, Inspector and Auditor; the 2026 notice gives an age range of 18 to 32 depending on post. SSC CHSL is for Class 12 pass candidates aged 18 to 27 and fills LDC/JSA and DEO posts. Both have a Tier 1 and Tier 2 computer-based test, then document verification. Apply only on ssc.gov.in.

Key takeaways

  • SSC CGL needs a bachelor's degree; the 2026 notice gives an age range of 18 to 32 years depending on the post, calculated as on 1 August 2026.
  • SSC CHSL needs Class 12 pass; the 2026 notice gives an age limit of 18 to 27, so graduates can also apply if they are within the age limit.
  • Both exams have a Tier 1 computer-based test, a Tier 2 with a skill or typing component, and document verification. There is no interview.
  • Tier 1 in both exams is 100 questions in 60 minutes across reasoning, quant, English and general awareness, with negative marking for wrong answers.
  • Apply only on ssc.gov.in, read the official notification for your post's age and qualification rules, and never pay anyone who promises a seat.

What SSC CGL and SSC CHSL are

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) recruits staff for central government ministries, departments and offices. Two of its exams matter most to freshers:

  • SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level): for graduates. It fills Group B and Group C posts such as Assistant Section Officer, Inspector (Income Tax, Central Excise, Examiner), Sub-Inspector, Auditor, Accountant, Tax Assistant and Junior Statistical Officer.
  • SSC CHSL (Combined Higher Secondary Level): for Class 12 pass candidates. It fills Group C posts such as Lower Division Clerk / Junior Secretariat Assistant (LDC/JSA) and Data Entry Operator (DEO).

Both are national exams, held in many cities, in computer-based mode. For the 2026 cycle, reports of the official notices say the CGL notification came out on 21 May 2026 and the CHSL notification on 7 September 2026. Vacancy numbers change during the cycle, so check the latest figure on ssc.gov.in instead of relying on coaching posters.

A few points freshers often miss:

  • CGL age limits differ by post. Reported bands in the 2026 notice are 18 to 27 for posts such as Auditor, Accountant and Tax Assistant, 18 to 30 for many Inspector and Assistant posts, 20 to 30 for some posts, and up to 32 for Junior Statistical Officer. You can only be allotted posts whose age band you fit.
  • Relaxations exist. Reports of the notices list upper age relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST and 3 years for OBC, among others. Check the exact table in the notification.
  • Graduates can write CHSL. If you are 27 or younger, you can attempt both exams in the same year.

Always confirm these rules in the official notification on ssc.gov.in before you apply. Coaching sites sometimes copy last year's numbers.

Exam stages: how selection works

Both exams follow the same broad flow.

  1. Tier 1 (computer-based test). 100 questions in 60 minutes, split across General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English Comprehension. Wrong answers carry negative marking (0.5 marks per wrong answer, as reported for 2026). In CGL, Tier 1 is a screening stage.
  2. Tier 2 (computer-based test). This decides your rank.
  • CGL Paper I (compulsory for all) has mathematical abilities, reasoning, English, general awareness, a computer knowledge module and a qualifying Data Entry Speed Test. Extra papers apply to some posts: Paper II (Statistics) for JSO and Statistical Investigator, and Paper III (General Studies, Finance and Economics) for Assistant Audit and Accounts Officer.
  • CHSL Tier 2 has objective sections, a computer knowledge module, and a skill or typing test (data entry speed for DEO, typing for LDC/JSA).
  1. Document verification. You show your original certificates. Any mismatch in name, date of birth or category can cost you the post.

There is no interview in either exam. Final allocation depends on your Tier 2 marks, your post preferences and the vacancies in your category.

A six-month preparation plan

This plan assumes 4 to 6 hours a day. Adjust it if you are working.

  1. Month 1: Basics. Revise Class 8 to 10 maths (percentages, ratio, profit and loss, time and work, geometry basics). Read one English passage a day and note new words.
  2. Month 2: Reasoning and grammar. Practise series, coding-decoding, syllogisms and puzzles. Revise grammar rules: tenses, subject-verb agreement, prepositions, voice and narration.
  3. Month 3: General awareness. Cover static GK (history, polity, geography, economy, science) in small daily blocks, and read current affairs for the last 6 to 8 months.
  4. Month 4: Previous papers. Solve official previous-year question papers by section. Track which topics you get wrong.
  5. Month 5: Full mocks. Take at least three full Tier 1 mocks a week under time limits. Review every mock for longer than you took to write it.
  6. Month 6: Tier 2 and typing. Move to Tier 2 level questions, practise the computer module, and practise typing or data entry daily if your target post needs it.

Our guide to aptitude test preparation covers quant and reasoning shortcuts that also help in SSC Tier 1.

How to apply safely on ssc.gov.in

  1. Go to ssc.gov.in directly. Do not use links from forwarded messages.
  2. Complete one-time registration with your own mobile number and email.
  3. Fill the application, upload your photo and signature as the notice specifies, and pay the fee only through the official portal.
  4. Save the submitted form and fee receipt as PDFs.
  5. Use the correction window, if offered, to fix mistakes. You may not get another chance.
  6. Download admit cards and check results only on ssc.gov.in.

Nobody can sell you an SSC post. If someone asks for money to "fix" a selection, it is a scam. See our guide to fake HR call and email scams for warning signs.

Keep a backup plan while you prepare

SSC cycles can take more than a year from notification to joining. Many candidates work a job while preparing. On asuraa.in you can browse fresher jobs from verified companies, with apply links checked every morning, so you can keep earning and building experience while you study.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fresh graduate apply for both SSC CGL and SSC CHSL?

Yes, if you are within each exam's age limit. CHSL needs only Class 12, so graduates aged 18 to 27 can also sit for it. Many freshers write both because the syllabus overlaps.

Can final-year students apply for SSC CGL?

Reports of the 2026 notice say final-year students can apply if they can show proof of graduation within the timeline the notice sets. Read the essential qualification clause in the official notification before you apply.

Is there an interview in SSC CGL or CHSL?

No. Selection is based on the computer-based tests, the qualifying skill or typing test where it applies, and document verification. Your Tier 2 score decides your rank.

What is the official website for SSC exams?

The official website is ssc.gov.in. Registration, notices, admit cards and results are published there. Ignore links shared on WhatsApp or Telegram unless they open ssc.gov.in.

How long does it take to prepare for SSC CGL?

Most freshers need around six months of steady daily study to cover the syllabus and take enough mock tests. If you studied maths and English recently, you may need less time.
