What is a cloud engineer?

A cloud engineer is a technology professional who designs, deploys, automates and operates cloud infrastructure and cloud-based services. Wiz's role overview, last updated on 15 May 2026, describes the job as the bridge between architectural design and reliable production execution.

In plain terms, a software team writes an application and a cloud engineer makes sure it has somewhere dependable, secure and affordable to run. The platforms are usually AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud.

What does "the cloud" actually mean here?

The cloud means renting computing resources over a network instead of buying and running your own servers. NIST's definition of cloud computing (September 2011) calls it a model for on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable resources that can be provisioned and released with minimal management effort.

NIST lists five essential characteristics: on-demand self-service, broad network access, resource pooling, rapid elasticity and measured service. The last two explain why the job exists, since capacity can grow or shrink with demand and usage is metered, so someone has to manage both.

NIST also describes three service models, which decide how much a cloud engineer controls.

Service modelWhat the provider runsWhat the customer controls (per NIST)
IaaS (infrastructure)Physical hardware and virtualisationOperating systems, storage, deployed applications
PaaS (platform)Servers, operating systems, runtimeThe applications and their configuration
SaaS (software)The whole application stackLittle beyond user-level settings

Cloud engineers spend most of their time in IaaS and PaaS, where there is real infrastructure to design and configure.

What does a cloud engineer do day to day?

The work centres on building, automating and looking after cloud environments. Wiz lists infrastructure provisioning, infrastructure-as-code management, deployment workflows, cost and performance optimisation, access controls and environment monitoring.

Wiz also says security is now part of the role because of the shared responsibility model, in which the organisation must secure its own workloads, identities and configurations.

Here is an illustration, not a real company. A college fest team builds a ticketing site that will see a sudden spike in visitors when bookings open.

  1. The cloud engineer defines the servers, database and network in code, so the setup can be repeated exactly.
  2. They add automatic scaling, so capacity grows when traffic rises and shrinks afterwards.
  3. They set access rules so only the right people and services can reach the database.
  4. They add monitoring and an alert, so the team hears about a problem before users do.
  5. After the event, they review the bill and switch off what is no longer needed.

What skills does a cloud engineer need?

A cloud engineer needs a mix of platform knowledge, automation and security basics. Wiz's list is a useful checklist, and it also stresses that you will rarely master every tool.

Skill areaExamples named by WizWhy it matters
Infrastructure as codeTerraform, Pulumi, CloudFormation, AnsibleMakes environments repeatable and reviewable
ContainersDocker, KubernetesPackages and runs applications consistently
Identity and accessIAM roles, least privilege, secrets rotationLimits the damage if one account is compromised
Delivery and monitoringCI/CD pipelines, logging, metrics, incident responseShips changes safely and spots failures

Behind these sit older fundamentals: Linux, networking and a scripting language such as Python. Those are editorial suggestions, and our cloud engineer roadmap for India puts them in a learning order.

How is a cloud engineer different from a DevOps engineer or software engineer?

The roles overlap, and job titles vary between companies, so read the job description and not just the title. The table shows the usual centre of gravity for each.

RoleMain focusTypical output
Cloud engineerCloud infrastructure and servicesNetworks, compute, storage and access set up in the cloud
DevOps engineerDelivery pipelines and collaboration between development and operationsAutomated build, test and release flow
Software engineerApplication featuresCode that users interact with
Cloud architectOverall cloud designDesigns and standards that engineers implement

Wiz shows one possible progression from cloud engineer to DevOps engineer, then cloud architect, then cloud security engineer. Read what a DevOps engineer is and what a software engineer is to compare the day-to-day work.

Do you need a certification to become a cloud engineer?

No certification is mandatory according to the sources we opened, but they can help you structure your learning. Wiz says certifications help but that "projects usually matter more."

AWS groups its certifications into foundational, associate, professional and specialty levels. It says the foundational Cloud Practitioner needs no prior experience, while associate exams recommend prior cloud or IT experience.

Google Cloud has a similar ladder. Its certification page lists Cloud Digital Leader as foundational with no technical prerequisites, and Cloud Engineer as an associate exam for people with some hands-on deployment experience. Microsoft offers Azure Fundamentals as a beginner starting point, but we could not open Microsoft's full certification list, so check it directly.

Can a fresher in India become a cloud engineer?

Many people start in adjacent roles such as IT support, junior system administration or software development, then move towards cloud work. That is a common pattern rather than a rule, and no source we opened gave Indian hiring numbers.

Search for entry-level cloud postings on the jobs page and other boards, and note which skills recur. Then use the Career Path Planner or our guide to your first IT job in India to plan the gap.

What do most guides on cloud engineering get wrong?

Many guides are written by training vendors or tool sellers, and they share some habits worth watching for.

  • They start with tools. Learning Terraform before you understand networking and Linux leads to copying commands without knowing why they work.
  • They imply a certificate is a job offer. A certificate shows you studied a syllabus, while projects show you can build and fix things.
  • They quote US salaries as if they applied here. Pay depends on country, city, employer and experience, so check Indian sources for your own target.
  • They treat the cloud as only servers. Identity, cost control and security are core parts of the role.

FAQ

What is a cloud engineer in simple words?

A cloud engineer sets up and looks after the online computing resources that applications run on, such as servers, storage, databases and networks. They use platforms like AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, automate repeated work with code, and make sure systems stay secure and affordable.

What does a cloud engineer do every day?

A cloud engineer provisions resources, updates infrastructure code, manages who can access what, watches monitoring alerts, fixes failures and reviews cost. Wiz also lists deployment workflows and performance tuning. The exact mix depends on the team and whether the company runs in one cloud or several.

Is a cloud engineer the same as a DevOps engineer?

No, although the work overlaps. A cloud engineer focuses on cloud infrastructure and services, while a DevOps engineer focuses on delivery pipelines and collaboration between development and operations. Some companies use the titles interchangeably, so compare job descriptions instead of relying on the name.

Do cloud engineers need to know coding?

Yes, to a working level. Cloud engineers write infrastructure-as-code files and scripts to automate tasks, and Wiz lists tools such as Terraform, Pulumi and Ansible. You usually do not build full applications, but a scripting language such as Python or Bash is a common expectation.

Can a fresher become a cloud engineer?

Yes, though many people reach the role through junior IT, support or development positions first. Build small projects on a free tier, learn Linux and networking, and consider an entry-level certificate. No source we opened gives a guaranteed route or timeline.

Which cloud certification should a beginner start with?

The major providers each offer a foundational option, such as AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, Google Cloud Digital Leader or Microsoft Azure Fundamentals. Choose the platform that appears most in the job postings you want, and pair the certificate with a hands-on project.

Final thoughts

A cloud engineer keeps applications running on rented infrastructure that is secure, scalable and cost-aware. The role rewards fundamentals, hands-on practice and clear communication with developers.
