What Is On-Demand Hiring? How It Works, Fit and Risks
On-demand hiring fills short shifts and tasks through platforms. Here is how it works, when it fits, and what to check before you use it.

What is on-demand hiring?
On-demand hiring is filling a short task or shift quickly through a platform, often within hours, rather than running a full recruitment process. The business posts what it needs, workers who are available accept, and payment follows the work.
It is one form of what people call instant hiring, and the closest to the quick-commerce idea behind Blinkit for hiring. For the wider label, see what instant hiring is.
How does on-demand hiring work?
The flow is short by design. GigSmart, an on-demand staffing platform, describes a model built around speed and flexibility in which businesses post shifts and connect with workers "sometimes within hours".
On its description, the steps are these:
- The business posts the shift with the role, location, pay and timing.
- Matching software identifies workers who fit.
- A worker accepts the shift in an app.
- The worker completes the shift and is paid, which GigSmart says can be the same day.
Ubeya, another vendor, describes its platform as software that combines scheduling, communication, compliance, attendance and payroll, with workers viewing shifts and clocking in by mobile app. Both pages are marketing content, so read their claims about efficiency as the vendors' own view.
When does on-demand hiring fit?
It fits work that is short, clear and easy to check. GigSmart lists seasonal surges, unexpected absences, event staffing, project-based work and market testing, across industries such as hospitality, food service, warehousing, logistics, retail, senior care and construction.
The table below adds our own view on fit. It is opinion, not sourced.
| Situation | On-demand fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Event weekend needing extra staff | Good | Short, defined task, clear start and end |
| Festive-season rush in retail or logistics | Good | Demand spike that will not last |
| Covering a sudden absence | Good | Speed matters more than long-term fit |
| A role needing months of training | Poor | Ramp-up cost is lost when the worker leaves |
| A role with client-sensitive or confidential work | Poor | Trust and continuity matter |
| Building a core team | Poor | This needs a normal hiring process |
What are the benefits and risks?
The benefits are speed and flexibility for both sides. GigSmart says businesses can match staffing to actual demand and workers can pick shifts that suit their schedules.
Risks are less often stated on vendor pages, so here is our list. These are our observations, not sourced findings.
- Inconsistent quality. A different person each shift means less continuity and more supervision.
- Limited training. Short engagements leave little time to teach your way of working.
- Thin checks. A very quick match may involve fewer checks, so decide what you need to verify for the task.
- Uneven income for workers. Shift work can bring gaps between assignments.
What should employers and workers know about Indian rules?
India's labour law has recently started to name this kind of work. The Labour Ministry says the four labour codes became effective on 21 November 2025 and that "gig work", "platform work" and "aggregators" were defined for the first time.
The same release says aggregators must contribute 1 to 2% of annual turnover, capped at 5% of the amount paid or payable to gig and platform workers. It also mentions an Aadhaar-linked Universal Account Number for portable benefits.
For scale, NITI Aayog's June 2022 report, reported by the Press Information Bureau, estimated 77 lakh gig workers in 2020-21 and projected 2.35 crore by 2029-30. The later number is a projection.
We are not lawyers, and we do not say here how any particular worker should be classified or which obligation applies to which business. That depends on the facts and the current rules, so take advice from a labour-law professional before building a workforce this way.
What should you check before using on-demand hiring?
Use this decision checklist, which is our own suggestion and not a legal or industry standard.
- Task fit. Is the task short, clear and easy to check on the day?
- Cost. Compare the platform's fees and worker pay with your normal hiring cost, using the platform's real terms and not a brochure.
- Compliance. Ask who is responsible for payments, records and any benefits, and get it in writing.
- Quality control. Decide how you will brief workers and review the work.
- Worker safety and fairness. Confirm pay terms are clear and paid on time.
- Exit plan. If a task grows into a lasting role, move to a normal, structured hire, as in how to screen candidates.
Is on-demand hiring the same as Asuraa's vision?
No. This section describes a vision, not a product. Asuraa.in imagines a flow of Job Discovery, AI Matching, AI Screening, AI Interview, Shortlist, Human Interview and Hiring, to make hiring simple, fast and accessible.
That flow is for hiring people into roles, with a human interview before a hire. Asuraa.in does not offer an on-demand shift marketplace, and the full flow is not live. Today it offers AI job matching, an AI resume reviewer and a jobs page.
What do most pages on on-demand hiring get wrong?
Most are written by platforms. These are the gaps to watch for.
- They present vendor claims as facts. Speed, savings and quality are the seller's claims.
- They skip the law. India now defines gig and platform work, and obligations can attach to platforms.
- They imply it suits every role. It fits short tasks better than roles that need training or continuity.
- They ignore the worker. Income stability, safety and clear terms matter to the people doing the shifts.
FAQ
What is on-demand hiring?
On-demand hiring means filling a short shift or task quickly through a platform, sometimes within hours. Businesses post the work, available workers accept it in an app, and payment follows the shift. It is a form of instant hiring, best for short, well-defined tasks.
How is on-demand hiring different from traditional hiring?
Traditional hiring recruits, screens and interviews a person for an ongoing role. On-demand hiring matches a worker to a specific shift or task, usually with less screening. It is faster for short work but offers less continuity and training than a normal hire.
Is on-demand hiring the same as gig work?
They overlap. On-demand hiring describes how a business fills work quickly, and gig work describes the worker's arrangement. Indian law now defines gig work and platform work, so take legal advice on classification.
What are the risks of on-demand hiring?
Possible risks include inconsistent quality, little training, thinner checks and uneven income for workers, though these are our observations. Legal duties may also apply, since India now defines gig work, platform work and aggregators. Check current rules before relying on the model.
What jobs use on-demand hiring?
GigSmart lists hospitality, food service, warehousing, logistics, retail, facility services, senior care and construction. Typical uses are seasonal surges, event staffing, cover for absences and project work. Roles that need long training or continuity usually suit a standard hiring process better.
Does Asuraa offer on-demand hiring?
No. Asuraa.in does not offer an on-demand shift marketplace, and its long-term vision of a faster path from job discovery to hiring is not yet live. Today it offers AI job matching, an AI resume reviewer and a jobs page.
Final thoughts
On-demand hiring is a useful tool for short, clear tasks and a poor substitute for building a team. Its speed is real for the right work, and so are the questions about quality and rules.
If you are a job seeker looking for regular roles, check your resume with the AI resume reviewer on asuraa.in and browse the jobs page.
