We are seeking a motivated Urban Planning Intern to support our team- Development, Planning and Urban Design on a range of projects across the Middle East and globally. This role offers hands on exposure to urban planning, spatial analysis, and research led design within a multidisciplinary environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in urban development, analytical thinking, and a willingness to learn practical planning tools, workflows, and professional standards.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
• Support urban planning and development studies, including land use planning, master planning, and policy review, under guidance from the team members.
• Assist with research, data collection, mapping, and basic spatial analysis to inform planning and design decisions.
• Help prepare diagrams, plans, maps, and presentations using GIS, CAD, Adobe, or similar tools.
• Contribute to translating planning concepts, datasets, and research findings into clear narratives and visual outputs.
• Support interpretation of spatial, demographic, and socio economic information to build an understanding of evidence based planning.
• Collaborate with urban designers, economists, transport planners, and environmental teams on integrated project tasks.
• Assist with the preparation of reports, concept notes, and client deliverables.
• Support research on urban trends, benchmarks, regulations, and international best practices, particularly within the Middle East context.
• Participate in internal knowledge sharing sessions and learning activities within the DPUD team.
• Support other teams across DPUD and Advisory as required.
Qualifications
Qualifications and Skills
• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Urban Planning, Spatial Planning, Regional Planning or a related discipline.
• Familiarity with tools such as GIS and analytical tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, Adobe Suite, MS Office), familiarity with AI-driven or data visualization tools such as SketchUp or Power BI is beneficial. (coursework experience acceptable).
• Basic understanding of planning processes, land use concepts, and spatial planning principles.
• Good analytical, organisational, and problem solving skills, with attention to detail.
• Ability to follow guidance while also showing initiative and curiosity.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast paced, collaborative environment.
Desirable Competencies
• Exposure to GIS or spatial analysis techniques through academic or project work.
• Basic understanding of planning frameworks, development controls, or urban regulations.
• Curiosity about sustainability, placemaking, mobility, resilience, and inclusive urban development.
• Enthusiasm for learning and contributing to real world, evidence based planning and design projects.
