What is a generative AI engineer?
It is the role that most directly matches the phrase "generative AI jobs" in India. What do Indian employers say about AI hiring?
The Indeed-Nasscom report, as covered by CIO&Leader on 22 May 2026, says 86% of employers had seen AI affect job roles and responsibilities, and 63% reported year-on-year increases in AI-related hiring, with BFSI and telecommunications leading.
It lists three top AI role categories: AI engineering and development, AI operations and enablement, and infrastructure and data systems. It also lists generative AI and LLMs, including prompt engineering, among the top skills.
These are survey results reported by a news site, so the exact base and definitions may differ from the original report. They show direction, not the number of openings for a specific role or city.
How do you enter generative AI jobs as a fresher?
Build proof, then apply to roles whose duties match it. Use these steps.
- Pick a target role. Choose from the table, for example AI developer or NLP engineer.

How do you read a generative AI job posting?
Read the duties first and the title last. A posting titled "prompt engineer" may mainly ask for software work, while an "AI engineer" posting may mainly ask for data preparation.
Check four things: what the person builds, which tools are named, how success is measured, and whether the role expects production work. Then compare with our skills tiers and decide whether you can show proof for most of the must-haves. You can browse current openings on the jobs page.
Keep a note of the phrases that recur across postings, such as "RAG", "fine-tuning" or "evaluation". Recurring phrases are a better guide to what employers want than any single title.
What do most guides on generative AI jobs get wrong?
Many pages mix hype with numbers that go stale. These are the common gaps.
