An analysis by AI Shipping Labs (page dated 4 March 2026) gives a data-based view, with limits. It reviewed 889 unique job descriptions from the Built In job board in January 2026, from Berlin, Amsterdam, London, Los Angeles and New York.

Its findings included:

• Python appeared in 82.5% of postings.
• Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) appeared in 35.9%, prompt engineering in 29.1% and LLM integration in 25.4%.
• 95.6% of positions prioritised production over research.

What would an AI engineer build? A worked example

Here is an illustration with an invented scenario, so treat it as a sketch. A company wants an assistant that answers employees' questions about leave and expense policies.

The AI engineer would pick a pre-trained language model, write clear instructions for it, and connect it to the company's policy documents so answers come from those documents. They would then build a test set of real questions, check the answers, add safeguards for questions the assistant should not answer, and monitor it after launch.

Notice that most of these steps are software engineering and evaluation, not model training. That matches the production focus in the postings above.

Which tools does an AI engineer use, and who do they work with?

Splunk's role page lists common tools such as LangChain, PyTorch, Hugging Face, Docker, OpenCV and Apache Spark. You will not need all of them, and the list will change, so learn the ideas behind a few rather than chasing every name.

Coursera stresses that AI engineers work across teams. Its workplace skills include collaboration, problem-solving, clear communication of technical reasoning, and the ability to translate business needs into AI solutions.

How is an AI engineer different from a machine learning engineer?
